Visakhapatnam / New Delhi, October 27 (News Desk):
India’s east coast is bracing for impact as Cyclone Montha intensifies over the Bay of Bengal and heads toward the Andhra Pradesh–Odisha coast. The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has issued a red alert for several coastal districts, warning of heavy to very heavy rainfall, strong winds up to 110 km/h, and a potential storm surge along low-lying areas.

According to IMD’s latest bulletin, the cyclone is expected to make landfall near Kakinada between Machilipatnam and Kalingapatnam late on Tuesday night (October 28). The system has already strengthened into a Severe Cyclonic Storm and continues to move northwestward at around 15 km/h.

In anticipation, over 50,000 residents from vulnerable coastal regions in Andhra Pradesh and Odisha have been evacuated to relief shelters. Schools and colleges in affected districts will remain closed for the next two days, while the National Disaster Response Force (NDRF) and State Disaster Response Force (SDRF) teams have been deployed with rescue equipment and relief materials.

Chief Minister N. Chandrababu Naidu held a review meeting with senior officials, directing all departments to ensure “zero casualty” through early evacuation and real-time communication. Power utilities and telecom operators have been advised to keep emergency crews on standby.

Fishermen have been strictly advised not to venture into the sea, while coastal residents have been urged to secure their homes and stay tuned to official IMD and district advisories.

As per the forecast, heavy rainfall is likely over East and West Godavari, Visakhapatnam, Vizianagaram, and Srikakulam districts of Andhra Pradesh, and in Ganjam and Gajapati districts of Odisha between October 27 and 29. The storm is expected to weaken gradually after landfall, but heavy rain could continue inland for another 24 hours.
