GPT-5.1 Update brings deeper reasoning, Instant & Thinking modes, higher limits and improved personalization. Learn all new features.

SAN FRANCISCO — OpenAI has rolled out the new GPT-5.1 model across ChatGPT, introducing a faster, more flexible and more adaptive AI system designed to power everyday writing, research, coding and decision-making tasks with significantly improved reasoning.

The company says GPT-5.1 blends the strengths of Instant and Thinking modes, enabling the system to automatically decide when deeper reasoning is needed and when quick responses are sufficient.

According to OpenAI, GPT-5.1 represents a major shift toward adaptive intelligence that adjusts its depth of analysis depending on the complexity of user prompts.

The core improvement is its new reasoning layer, allowing the model to “think longer” for scientific, financial, coding or analytical tasks while keeping general conversations natural and fast.

GPT-5.1 also introduces a streamlined “chain-of-thought view,” showing users a concise reasoning trace with the option to interrupt and ask for an immediate answer. This design attempts to balance transparency with efficiency.

The model is available to all ChatGPT tiers, though usage limits vary. Free users receive ten messages every five hours, after which the system shifts to a smaller model. Plus subscribers currently have a higher temporary limit of 160 messages every three hours, and Business and Pro users enjoy expanded or unlimited access with safeguards.

Paid tiers also receive access to the model picker, allowing users to manually switch between Instant (fast) and Thinking (deep reasoning). Plus and Business users get up to 3,000 messages per week on manual GPT-5.1 Thinking, while automatic Thinking usage does not count toward that limit.

GPT-5.1 Thinking offers context windows up to 196K tokens, enabling large document analysis and research-grade tasks, while Pro subscribers on Instant mode receive up to 128K tokens.

OpenAI has updated personalization controls as well, introducing clearer tone presets—from Professional to Friendly to Candid—along with new sliders for warmth, conciseness and emoji use. These settings apply across all conversations and are designed to help users shape the AI’s personality and communication style.

The rollout also affects legacy models. GPT-5 remains accessible for three months under the Legacy section for paid users, while older chats using GPT-4o or GPT-4.1 will transition automatically to GPT-5.1 equivalents unless users enable additional model options.

The company notes that GPT-5.1 provides improved adherence to custom instructions and better consistency in tone, making it more reliable for professional workloads.

Industry observers say GPT-5.1’s adaptive reasoning approach reflects a trend toward hybrid AI systems that dynamically adjust computational depth rather than locking users into fixed model choices.

OpenAI states that GPT-5.1 supports the full suite of ChatGPT tools, including web search, data analysis, image capabilities and the Canvas environment.

Users on web platforms can also adjust the Thinking-time toggle, choosing from Standard, Extended, Light or Heavy settings depending on task complexity.

The update is rolling out gradually to global users, with OpenAI saying that some accounts may receive access ahead of others as the deployment expands.
