OpenAI has officially announced that its mid-tier subscription, ChatGPT Go, will be offered free for all users across India for one year, starting November 4, 2025.
The offer aims to expand AI access in one of OpenAI’s fastest-growing markets, following strong adoption of ChatGPT’s free and Plus plans.
According to OpenAI’s statement, ChatGPT Go sits between the Free and Plus tiers, priced originally at ₹399/month (US $4.6). The plan provides 10× higher message, image, and file upload limits than the free version, and 2× longer memory for better conversational continuity.
The company confirmed that Indian users can pay through UPI, and that the offer is exclusive to India during the first rollout phase.
Industry experts view this as a strategic move to make AI tools affordable in India’s price-sensitive digital economy. “This initiative may redefine the accessibility of premium AI in emerging markets.
OpenAI’s Dev Day 2025, scheduled in Bengaluru, will also feature demonstrations of ChatGPT Go’s new creative tools and local-language features, including early-stage Hindi and Tamil support.
Analysts believe that offering ChatGPT Go for free will help OpenAI gather broader usage data and encourage transitions to the upcoming premium plans once the free year ends.
