Sri Lanka: Poson Week Commences,  Anuradhapura Prepares For Festivities Amid Tightened Security

The national Poson Week has commenced in Sri Lanka and will continue until the 24th of June. Anuradhapura District Secretary Janaka Jayasundara announced that nearly 1 million devotees are expected to visit the holy city of Anuradhapura and Mihintale for the Poson Festivities this year. He assured pilgrims that all necessary facilities were in place. Police have tightened security in Anuradhapura for Poson, deploying 4,500 officers to ensure a safe and peaceful festival. Poson festival marks the arrival of Buddhism to Sri Lanka when Arahat Mahinda, the son of Emperor Asoka preached the first sermon to a Sri Lankan king.
