In Iran, the final result of the 14th presidential election will be decided in a runoff between the top contenders, Masoud Pezeshkian and Saeed Jalili. Spokesman of Iran’s Election Headquarters Mohsen Eslami said that the runoff election will be held on the 5th of July. Announcing the first round’s results at a press conference in the Iranian capital Tehran yesterday, Eslami said that Pezeshkian garnered 42.6 percent of votes, while Jalili bagged 38.8 percent of votes. The two candidates will now face a runoff election to determine who will assume the country’s top executive position. The other two candidates, Mohammad Baqer Qalibaf got 13.8 per cent of votes, while Mostafa Pourmohammadi collected 0.8 percent of votes, Eslami added.

Voting for Iran’s 14th presidential election took place last Friday after President Ebrahim Raisi died in a helicopter crash last month. According to authorities, voting was held at close to 59,000 polling stations in more than 95 states. However, the election saw the lowest voter turnout for a presidential election since the Islamic Republic was established in 1979.
