Over 1 Crore People Screened In Gujarat’s Sickle Cell Anemia Control Program

In Gujarat, over 1 crore people have been screened so far under Sickle cell Anemia control program. Gujarat was the first state in the country to launch a sickle cell anemia control program in 2006.

Talking to Akashvani, Deputy Director Epidemic, Department of Health Dr Jayesh Katira said the programme is being run successfully in 14 tribal districts of the state.

He said apart from mass screening, encouraging genetic testing, community outreach programmes for awareness, the government has also set up dedicated care centres for Sickle Cell at tribal districts Dang and Valsad.
