Leader of Opposition in the Maharashtra Legislative Council Ambadas Danve was suspended on Tuesday (2nd July 2024) from the Upper House for five days. The motion to suspend the Shiv Sena (UBT) leader for using unparliamentary language in the House, was tabled by state Parliamentary Affairs Minister Chandrakant Patil and passed with majority.
Reading the suspension order, Deputy Chairperson Neelam Gorhe said that Mr. Danve demonstrated indiscipline and used foul and abusive language towards BJP legislator Prasad Lad. Stating that Mr. Danve’s behaviour had tarnished the Council’s image, the Chairperson said such misbehaviour cannot be ignored as it could create a new precedent.
It may be recalled that Mr. Danve had yesterday hurled abuses at BJP MLC Prasad Lad for demanding a resolution condemning Congress MP Rahul Gandhi’s recent remarks in the Lok Sabha.
Lamenting the lack of debate, Shiv Sena (UBT) Chief Uddhav Thackeray labeled the suspension as one-sided and a premeditated conspiracy. However, Deputy Chief Minister and BJP leader, Devendra Fadnavis said there is no rule to discuss a motion to suspend an elected member.
