By-Election Results 2024: BJP Wins 11 Seats, Congress Gets 7

Besides announcement of results for marathon Lok Sabha elections and the assembly polls in Odisha and Andhra Pradesh yesterday, the results also came out for the by-election to 25 assembly seats across different parts of the country.
 
BJP has registered victory in 11 seats while Congress seven constituencies, Samajwadi Party and Trinamool Congress bagged two each while Jharkhand Mukti Morcha, Bharat Adivasi Party and Communist Party of India (Marxist-Leninist) (Liberation) got one each.
 
In Gujarat, the ruling Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) won all five assembly seats, increasing its tally in the 182-member state assembly to 161. Elections to Porbandar, Manavadar, Khambhat, Vaghodiya and Vijapur assembly constituencies were necessitated after the sitting Congress and independent MLAs resigned and joined the BJP.
 
In Uttar Pradesh, out of four assembly seats, BJP and Samajwadi Party bagged two seats each. BJP candidates won from Dadraul and Lucknow East while while the Samajwadi Party candidates registered victories in Gainsari and Duddhi (SC) assembly constituencies.
 
In Himachal Pradesh, the Congress has won four out of six constituencies in Assembly bypolls while BJP took two seats. The Congress secured Sujanpur, Gagret, Kutlehar and Lahaul and Spiti assembly seats, while BJP won from Dharamshala and Barsar seats.
 
With victory in four assembly segments, the strength of Congress MLAs has gone up to 38 in the house with an effective strength of 65. The result ensures that there is no immediate threat to the Congress government in the state for now. The two new seats has taken the BJP tally up from 25 to 27.
 
In Jharkhand, former State Chief Minister Hemant Soren’s wife and Jharkhand Mukti Morcha candidate Kalpana Soren won the Gandey assembly by-poll against BJP’s Dilip Kumar Verma. The seat fell vacant after the resignation of Jharkhand Mukti Morcha MLA Sarfaraz Ahmad.
 
In Bihar, Shiv Prakash Ranjan from the Communist Party of India (Marxist-Leninist) (Liberation) defeated Prabhunath Prasad from the Janata Dal (United) in Agiaon Assembly seat.
 
In West Bengal, Trinamool Congress’s Reyat Hossain Sarkar won over Congress’s Anju Begam in Bhagabangola constituency. The by-poll to Bhagabangola seat was necessitated due to the death of TMC MLA Idris Ali in February.
 
TMC actress-turned-politician Sayantika Banerjee won from the Baranagar seat against BJP’s Sajal Ghosh. The bypoll to Baranagar seat was held following the resignation of Trinamool Congress MLA Tapas Roy who joined the BJP.
 
In Haryana, new Chief Minister Nayab Singh Saini won the bypoll from Karnal constituency against Congress leader Tarlochan Singh. The seat fell vacant after former Chief Minister Manohar Lal Khattar resigned to contest Lok Sabha elections.
 
In Tripura, BJP won the Rampur assembly by-poll. The Ramnagar seat fell vacant following the death of BJP MLA Surajit Datta.
 
In Telangana, Congress won the Secunderabad Cantonment assembly by-polls. The by-election to the seat was necessitated due to the death of Lasya Nandita in a road accident in February earlier this year.
 
In Karnataka, Congress won from Shorapur constituency. In Tamil Nadu, the Vilavancode seat was also won by Congress. The bypoll to the seat was held after the resignation of Congress MLA S Vidyadharini.
 
In Rajasthan, Bharat Adivasi Party candidate registered victory in Bagidora seat.
