A total of 14 candidates have filed their nomination for the biennial elections for 11 seats of Maharashtra Legislative Council.
The ruling Bharatiya Janata Party has nominated Pankaja Munde, Amit Gorkhe, Sadabhau Khot, Yogesh Tilekar and renominated Parinay Phuke, Shiv Sena has fielded Krupal Tumane and Bhawana Gawli. The Ajit Pawar-led Nationalist Congress Party has fielded Rajesh Vitekar and Shivajirao Garje.
From the opposition side, Congress has renominated Pradyna Satav while Shiv Sena (Uddhav Balasaheb Thackeray) has chosen to field Milind Narvekar. NCP (Sharadchandra Pawar) is supporting sitting MLC and Peasants and Workers’ Party (PWP) leader Jayant Prabhakar Patil.
Besides, two independents, Ajay Singh Sengar and Arun Jagtap have also filed their nomination.
Today (2nd July 2024) was the last date for filing nominations. The nominations will be taken up for scrutiny on Wednesday (2nd July 2024) while the last date of withdrawal of names is 5th of July. The election, if necessary, will take place on 12th of July with the counting set to begin after the close of polls in the evening.
The legislative assembly is the electoral college for the elections. The quota for the winning candidates is 23. The BJP has 103 members, NCP has 40 and Shiv Sena has 38. From the opposition, Congress has 37 MLAs, Shiv Sena (UBT) has 15 and Sharad Pawar-led NCP has 10 MLAs.
