MoS Suresh Gopi & ISRO Chairman Discuss flood Risk Assessment For Kerala Dams

Union Minister of State for Petroleum and Natural Gas and Tourism Suresh Gopi met ISRO Chairman S Somanath at Antariksh Bhawan in Bengaluru yesterday. A release by ISRO says that the visiting dignitary discussed the use of space technology for analysing the flood risk associated with the Mullaperiyar and Idukki dams in Kerala. The Minister expressed his concern with the ISRO scientists on the need to evaluate the worst-case flood scenario linked to these two dams in Kerala. The release further says that ISRO Chairman S Somanath assured the minister of providing space-based inputs related to high-resolution terrain data for the researchers to engage in flood modelling and assess probable inundation by identifying potential flood risks. S Somanath also informed the minister about developing a prototype solution integrating flood risk with rescue and rehabilitation planning along with satellite communication capabilities. He briefed the minister about the role of space-based support that can be extended for disaster management.
